Vday The True Story Behind The Massacre of Love

Ah Valentines Day, it is upon us. With so many ladies and gents hearts a flutter, each one with a special glint in their eye. Each one of us, myself included eyeing some sort of trinket. Perhaps for you, you’ve dropped subtle hints for months about the new diamond ring you’ve been so desperately seeking.

Or perhaps you’ve gone all out and have literally drawn a treasure map leading your loved one to the exact shop, link, online boutique, or photo of the object/s you so desire.

Perhaps you are the one searching, scouring every store, every outlet every possible place where all things love are to be had only to turn up empty handed. Perhaps you’ve chosen a more direct approach, hoping bigger is better and have purchased something along these lines:

Well I’ve come to burst your love bubble. Not that all of these notions, trinkets, objects aren’t lovely. Some can even deliver more then you bargained for, adding extra love around the hips:

Who am I kidding, I’d totally dig into one of those ^ I can’t turn down chocolate. I’m kind of addicted. Everyone loves traditional, it says so much without truly really saying anything at all about the one we love. It says, I had enough money to purchase this for you and I hope you take it as a symbol of how much I care.

But let’s be honest. The value of love isn’t determined by the dollar amount. For some, maybe it is. But true love, real love is the ability to set yourself aside and for one moment if not many moments, lift up the one you love. Maybe they’ve had a tough day, or are going through a difficult time. It’s measured in the amount of time you spend to remind that person why you chose them, and they you. Sometimes it takes some gentle nudging or a chance for the one you love to get some well needed rest.

And sometimes it means giving up a night out to stay in. Society has demanded that we pay attention on February 14th. It demands that we declare our love on this day, this one and only day. But what if we used the other 364 days of the year to declare it instead? We might just surprise ourselves at how well we prove our love to others. Maybe its placing a little note next to the one we love before they head off for work. Perhaps it’s making them dinner when they arrive home late from work one night. Or maybe its simply being there for them when they need you the most. When it seems as though they aren’t sure why you’re there for them.

Perhaps its to make them tea, on a cold night when they are ill. These are the ways in which love lives and breathes. These are the reasons why relationship after relationship we try again. Heart break after heart break. Because Vday isn’t really about buying love, it’s about showing love. Here’s to showing others truly how much we love them.

Happy Valentines Day

Love, WFTR
